SIBELIUSEn Saga SIBELIUSFinlandia BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, “Eroica”
Opening with two chords of seismic power, Beethoven’s groundbreaking “Eroica” Symphony redefined the 19th-century symphony as a musical odyssey of vast emotional scope. Battles rage and harmonies clash with wild abandon as Beethoven channels the turbulent world around him, confronting grief and despair before ending in a heroic blaze of glory.
Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki opens the evening with two orchestral poems by her homeland’s musical hero, Sibelius. En Saga pays tribute to Finland’s rich history of mythic storytelling, while Finlandia stands as a testament to the Finnish people’s strength in their quest for independence from Imperial Russia. “We fought 600 years for our freedom,” Sibelius wrote, “and Finlandia is the story of this fight. It is the song of our battle, our hymn of victory.”

SHIRA SAMUELS-SHRAGG conducts
WAGNER Siegfried Idyll MOZART Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550 (original version)
The DSO is coming to you! For one night only, assistant conductor Shira Samuels-Shragg conducts the magnificent Dallas Symphony Orchestra live in Frisco for a special experience of the full spectrum of orchestral emotion.
The ferocity of Mozart’s grief and passion make his 40th symphony one of his most famous works. One of two that he composed in a minor key, Mozart’s 40th takes the listener through both elation and suffering in a display of the composer’s interest in depth and contrast.
Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll is intimate and warm, originally composed as a birthday gift for his wife. Its colorful melodies and quiet bliss evoke the tender setting of its first performance, when Wagner’s wife awoke in their lakeside villa to find musicians softly playing this new piece just for her.
Join the DSO at the Stonebriar Community Church for an unforgettable evening of music without the commute to Dallas!

STEVE HACKMAN Conducts AJANI NANABULUKU Vocalist JECOREY ARTHUR Emcee KHALIL OVERTON Emcee GABRIELGLOBUS-HOENICH Drummer NICK CLARK Bassist
Is it wickedness or weakness? Will it be salvation or damnation? Who bears the curse: the puppet or the puppet master?
The concert STEVE HACKMAN CONDUCTS HIS Stravinsky X Kendrick Lamar ponders these mysteries. A daring fusion of two masterpieces, the work combines Stravinsky’s Petrouchka with Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer Prize-winning album DAMN. These two works share striking similarities: first, they each offer a challenging commentary on the human experience through a ‘show-within-a-show’ device (in Petrouchka a puppet show takes place within the main action on stage; in DAMN, an alternate world is set into motion by a gunshot); second, the main characters, Petrouchka and Kung-Fu Kenny, waver between being joyfully accepted and sadly misanthropic, while each struggles with his sense of both identity and reality.
As the puppets of Stravinsky’s ballet become human and begin to experience emotions, the music explores corresponding songs from Kendrick’s album: ‘LOVE.’, ‘FEAR.’, ‘XXX.’, ‘FEEL.’, ‘LOYALTY.’, ‘HUMBLE.’
Steve Hackman shows remarkable skill in his synthesis of these two powerful, poignant works, composed here into a single opus that unfolds in each work’s original order. With each new scene in Stravinsky’s ballet, we experience the next Kendrick Lamar song from the album.
As a special benefit, Loge Ticket Holders will be treated to a champagne reception during intermission, courtesy of the James S. Kunzman Foundation. The reception will be hosted just outside the loge boxes, offering guests one complimentary glass of champagne as part of this elevated experience.
