Dallas Symphony Orchestra Announces Summer at the Meyerson

Dallas, Texas (May 3, 2023) – The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center will be filled with the sounds of country, classical, gospel and more this summer. From June through August, audiences will enjoy an incredible lineup of concerts and events at the Meyerson that will celebrate the music and culture of our city.

The Dallas Symphony’s orchestral season will wind down in June, but the music will keep playing throughout the summer,” said Kim Noltemy, Ross Perot President & CEO of the Dallas Symphony Association. “From annual events such as the Dallas Winds Fourth of July Celebration and Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Gala to stand-alone performers such as Los Lobos and Gary LeVox, the Meyerson will present something for everyone. We’ll cap off the summer with the annual DSO Wine & Food Festival to toast to the upcoming concert season.

The Unicorn’s Birthday! A Sensory-Friendly Concert Celebration


The DSO will present the world-premiere of a new family-friendly concert event, The Unicorn’s Birthday. Dallas-based composer Bob Singleton has composed a brand-new concert that presents the instruments of the orchestra in unique and friendly ways. Ducks will quack, birds will flap their wings and penguins will march – with the sounds of the orchestra and gentle interactions from the audience. Join the DSO with your youngest friends to introduce them to the instruments. Special arrangements will be made to accommodate the individual needs of people with acute sensitivities. Fidgets, earplugs and eye covers, quiet rooms and brighter lighting in the hall will be available.

Dallas Black Dance Theatre Gala, The Big Dance

The BIG Dance is a citywide dance party worthy of the BIG D! The 2023 event will be an unforgettable night that features live music from traditional and contemporary local Dallas artists including the premier Cuban style orchestra Havana NRG!, the full experience salsa band Fusion Latina and Mariachi Zacatecas. Maria Guerrero of NBC 5 is the emcee and Amanda Cristina Salsa will lead the dance floor with lessons in salsa, bachata, merengue and reggaeton styles. The night will include food and spirits, festive décor and professional dance vignettes from Dallas Black Dance Theatre dancers to create the flair of Latin and Afro-Latin culture! All proceeds will benefit Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Academy by providing a 40% subsidy for training fees for 500+ students.

Together We Sing – Benefit for Project Unity
Project Unity and the DSO will once again present a soul-stirring night to remember at the annual Together We Sing presentation where Gospel Meets Classical.  You are invited to celebrate National Black Music Month and kick off Juneteenth weekend with this extraordinary musical experience featuring GRAMMY Award-Winning performer Erica Campbell, the 200-voice ecumenical Project Unity Choir, a full orchestra and more. In recognition of Black Music Month, a special tribute to 50 Years in Hip Hop will be celebrated with a unique and innovative Hip Hop Meets Classical musical tribute.

Earshot Readings in Partnership with American Composers Orchestra

 
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra will host EarShot Readings on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 with four featured composers: Moni (Jasmine) Guo, Diallo Banks, Ricardo Ferro, and Iván Enrique Rodríguez. The composers will work throughout the day with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra musicians and DSO Assistant Conductor Maurice Cohn, and receive feedback from mentor composers Quinn Mason, a 27-year old Dallas-based composer and conductor; “expert in orchestration” (The New York Times) Jimmy López Bellido and Xi Wang, a Dallas-based composer and faculty member at Southern Methodist University. At 2:00pm that afternoon, the DSO and Maurice Cohn, Assistant Conductor of DSO, perform all four works at Meyerson Symphony Hall, after which a recording will be provided to the participants and published online.

Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts – Unplugged

After 20 years as front man of the multi-award-winning super group Rascal Flatts, Gary LeVox is embarking on a solo chapter. His debut single “The Distance” (Big
Machine Records/Capitol Christian Music Group), is one of five songs on LeVox’s debut solo collection ONE ON ONE (Big Machine Records), which includes multiple compelling collaborations. LeVox followed the release of ONE ON ONE with “We Got Fight,” a song featured as the coveted end credit in Netflix’s film The Ice Road.
LeVox now has released his first solo country single “Get Down Like That”, and has hit the road to bring his songs and legendary voice to the fans.

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI) brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), a free program for all participants. Following a comprehensive audition process and a multi-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world while serving as dynamic music ambassadors. Six talented DFW musicians are on the roster of this extraordinary ensemble.
