Mendelssohn’s “A Symphony Cantata”

Paul McCreesh joins the DSO to conduct a grand spiritual concert including vocal soloists, the Dallas Symphony Chorus and the Lay Family Organ. Also known as his Symphony No. 2, Mendelssohn described the work as a “symphonic cantata.” Bearing a superficial similarity to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, it begins with three instrumental movements although on a much smaller scale and closes with a cantata-like structure for chorus, solo voices and orchestra.

Special benefit concert event, CancerBlows returns to Dallas in March 2023 featuring legendary brass performers including 10-Time GRAMMY winner Arturo Sandoval, world-renowned brass quintet Canadian Brass, jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, Hollywood movie trumpeter Wayne Bergeron (West Side Story, The Incredibles, La La Land), former Canadian Brass member Jens Lindemann, and many more appearing with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and UNT’s One O’Clock Lab Band – all performing together to raise money for cancer research.

For 60 years, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. Paul Simon’s 1987 Graceland album introduced Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the world and late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honor.
