Kathryn Bostic
Kathryn Bostic is an Emmy®-nominated and award-winning composer and artist known for her work on films, TV, theater and concert music. Bostic is the first African American female score composer to join the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
Bostic has written for Broadway, most notably with award-winning playwright August Wilson on Gem of the Ocean. This inspired her tribute symphony commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra The Great Migration-A Symphony in Celebration of August Wilson. Other Pittsburgh Symphony commissions include As I Please and Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am-Selections from the Cinematic Score; also performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for their “Reel Change” concert series. She was the 2020-2023 Artist in Residence for The Chicago Sinfonietta. Other commissions and performances include Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Riverside Symphonia, Louisville Orchestra and Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
Emmy®-nominated for her original score in award winning films The Supremes at Earl’s All You Can Eat; Amy Tan:Unintended Memoir and Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am; Bostic also wrote and performed the Toni Morrison film end title song “High Above the Water”, which was shortlisted for the Oscars 2020 “Best Original Song.”
