LISZT Piano Concerto No. 2 in A Major
R. STRAUSS Suite from Der Rosenkavalier
Fiery emotion and virtuosity have come to define Liszt’s piano music. And while the Hungarian composer’s Piano Concerto No. 2 has plenty of pyrotechnics, it also offers countless moments of graceful lyricism. Jean-Yves Thibaudet — “the most soulful of players” (Gramophone) — returns to the DSO to perform Liszt’s luminous concerto, a work of power that flows in one continuous river of sound.
Be whisked away to Golden Age Vienna as two composers pay homage to the city’s waltz tradition. Richard Strauss’ Suite from Der Rosenkavalier evokes the opera’s saga of love, power and forgiveness, culminating in one of music’s most sweeping, sublime waltzes. A collection of Johann Strauss, Jr.’s lilting dances also receives an intimate reimagining in Schoenberg’s arrangements for chamber orchestra.
