Tamara Mumford

Mezzo Soprano

A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Ms. Mumford made her debut there at age 23 as Laura in Luisa Miller, and has since appeared in more than 150 performances with the company.  Some of which include Le Pèlerin in the new production of L’Amour de Loin by Kaija Saariaho, Smeaton in the new production of Anna Bolena, and in productions of Rigoletto, Ariadne auf Naxos, Il Trittico, Parsifal, Idomeneo, Cavalleria Rusticana, Nixon in China, The Queen of Spades, the complete Ring Cycle, The Magic Flute, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Wozzeck.  Other recent opera engagements include the title role in the American premiere of Henze’s Phaedra and the title role in The Rape of Lucretia as well as the role of Nica in the World Première of Yardbird at Opera Philadelphia, Carmen at Crested Butte Opera, Marta in Iolanta at Dallas Opera, the title role in Dido and Aeneas at the Glimmerglass Festival, Ottavia in L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Glyndebourne Opera Festival and the BBC Proms, Arsace in Aureliano in Palmira and Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia at the Caramoor Festival, Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri at the Palm Beach Opera, Queen Gertrude in The Thirteenth Child at Santa Fe Opera, the title role in The Rape of Lucretia, conducted by Lorin Maazel at the Castleton Festival, and Principessa in Suor Angelica and Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi with the Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi di Milano.

An active concert performer and recitalist, Ms. Mumford has toured Asia with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Spain with the Munich Philharmonic.  With Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, she performed the world premiere of John Adam’s oratorio, The Gospel According to the Other Mary on tour though Europe.  And toured with the LA Phil again as the soloist in Mahler’s 3rd Symphony.  She has also appeared with the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Utah Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras, Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, and at the Hollywood Bowl and the Ravinia, Tanglewood, Grand Teton, Britt and La Jolla Summer Music festivals.  Other recent concert appearances have included collaborations with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Met Chamber Ensemble in Zankel Hall, Desert Song Festival, and appearances in the Musicians from Marlboro’s summer festivals and US tours.

On DVD, Ms. Mumford can be seen in the Met: LIVE IN HD series broadcasts of L’Amour de Loin, Anna Bolena, Wozzeck, Das Rheingold, Gotterdämmerung, The Magic Flute, Nixon in China, Manon Lescaut, and Il Trittico.  Her portrayal of Ottavia in Robert Carsen’s production of L’incoronazione di Poppea at Glyndebourne is captured on the Decca label. Ms. Mumford recently recorded Handel’s Messiah with the Tabernacle Choir and Bryn Terfel, Sonya Yoncheva and Rolando Villazon, Other recordings include Mahler’s 8th Symphony and John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic (Deutsche Grammophon), Beethoven’s Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony (Avie), the Grammy Award nominated recording of Milhaud’s L’Orestie d’Eschyle (Naxos) and a collaboration with several singers and Yale University to record the complete songs of Charles Ives (Naxos).
