James Romeo

Piccolo

James Romeo joined the DSO as the piccolo player in 2022. Previously, he served as Assistant Principal Flute/Piccolo with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra for the 2019/20 season. He has performed as Guest Principal Flute with the San Diego Symphony, the San Diego Opera, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Tucson Symphony and the Modesto Symphony and has also performed with the Indianapolis Symphony and Canton Symphony Orchestras.

James has competed successfully in several competitions, winning prizes at the San Diego Flute Guild Young Artist Competition, the San Diego Musical Merit Foundation and the Tuesday Musical Association of Ohio.

As an educator, James served as Assistant Director at the Jacobs School of Music Flute Academy at Indiana University, and on the faculty of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music. James has also worked in educational outreach with organizations including Villa Musica and Art of Èlan, providing musical opportunities to public school communities in the greater San Diego area.

A native of San Diego, James received a Bachelor of Music at Indiana University, studying with Thomas Robertello, and a Master of Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music studying with Joshua Smith. Additionally, his principal teachers include Cheryl Bretsnyder, and his parents, both professional woodwind players.
