Etienne Dupuis
Praised for his “suave, empathetic baritone” and his “refined, charismatic” stage presence (The New York Times), Etienne Dupuis enjoys international acclaim, appearing regularly at the world’s most important opera stages and concert platforms.
Etienne’s exciting 2021/2022 season includes Rodrigue in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of the French version of Verdi’s “Don Carlos”, his San Francisco Opera debut in the title role of a new “Don Giovanni” production, the protagonist of “Eugene Onegin” in concert with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Rodrigo in “Don Carlo” and the prestigious Gala concert in aid of the German AIDS Foundation at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as well as four productions at the Wiener Staatsoper, where he appears in the title role of a new staging of “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, as Valentin in “Faust”, Marcello in “La bohème” and Albert in “Werther”.
The past three seasons brought the star baritone to the Paris Opéra (title role in a new production of “Don Giovanni”, Rodrigo in “Don Carlo”, Belcore in “L’elisir d’amore” and a Tchaikovsky concert), Metropolitan Opera (Conte d’Almaviva in “Le nozze di Figaro” and Marcello for his Met debut), Wiener Staatsoper (house debut as Valentin in a new production of “Faust”), Bayerische Staatsoper Munich (Conte d’Almaviva), Deutsche Oper Berlin (Eugene Onegin and a Verdi Gala), Opéra de Marseille (Germont in “La traviata” and Valentin) and the Opéra de Montréal (Eugene Onegin).
Earlier engagements have included appearances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Teatro Real of Madrid (Marcello), Opéra National de Paris (Pelléas in “Pelléas et Mélisande”, Oreste in “Iphigénie en Tauride”), Deutsche Oper Berlin (Figaro in “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, Silvio in “Pagliacci”, Zurga in “Les pêcheurs de perles”, Pelléas, Germont, Rodrigo, Marcello and Valentin), the Bayerische Staatsoper of Munich (Figaro), the Sydney Opera House (Athanaël in “Thaïs”, Germont), Opernhaus Zurich, Opéra de Nantes, and Opera National Du Rhin (Zurga) as well as to the Opéra de Montréal (Joe in “Dead Man Walking”, Simon Doucet in the world premiere of “Les Feluettes” and Pink in the world premiere of “Another Brick in the Wall”).
His discography features a solo album with the string quartet Quator Claudel-Canimex (“Love Blows as the Wind Blows” – ATMA Classique), in addition to appearances as a featured artist on the albums “Opéra: une histoire d’Amour” with the Orchestre regional Avignon-Provence (Universal), “Paris, mon amour” by Sonya Yoncheva and the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana (Sony), Honegger and Ilbert: “L’Aiglon”, recorded with the Montréal Symphony Orchestra (Decca), Meyerbeer’s “Dinorah” with Deutsche Oper Berlin (cpo) as well as Massenet’s “Thérèse”, Halevy’s “La Reine de Chypre” and Messager’s “Passionnément” for Palazzetto Bru Zane.
Etienne Dupuis was born in Montréal, where he completed his vocal studies at the McGill University, after which he became a member of l’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal.
