Sara Evans
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and Sara Evans is about to put smiles on a lot of faces with the release of Entendido.聽 The 13-song collection finds Evans putting her distinctive creative stamp on some of the most iconic songs in country and pop music as well as shining a spotlight on some little known gems.
Released on her own Born to Fly Records, Entendido is Evans鈥 first solo studio album since 2017鈥檚 critically acclaimed Palabras. On Entendido she shines a spotlight on songs that have served as the soundtrack for the American experience for the last six decades. Little Big Town鈥檚 Phillip Sweet joins Evans for a buoyant rendition of the Stevie Nicks and Kenny Loggins classic 鈥淲henever I Call You Friend鈥 and Old Crow Medicine Show adds their unique flavor to the Hank Williams standard 鈥淚鈥檓 So Lonesome I Could Cry.鈥 Her cover of Dexy鈥檚 Midnight Runners鈥 1982 hit 鈥淐ome On Eileen鈥 is absolutely infectious and her pulsating rendition of The Knack鈥檚 鈥淢y Sharona鈥 shows a rockin鈥 side of Evans rarely heard.
Over the last two decades, Evans has carved a successful career anchored by her insightful songwriting and warm, evocative voice. With such enduring hits as 鈥淪uds in the Bucket,鈥 鈥淎 Real Fine Place to Start,鈥 鈥淧erfect鈥 and 鈥淎 Little Bit Stronger,鈥 she鈥檚 earned recognition as the fifth most played female artist at country radio and continues to be a force on the road with tour dates criss-crossing the country. For her ninth studio album, the Missouri native serves up an eclectic bounty of songs that have shaped her life and storied career.
鈥淚鈥檝e always put cover songs on my records just because I think they are so fun. My fans have been asking for a covers record for years and now just seemed like the right time,鈥 says Evans, who has always been a champion for great songwriting and has covered Gavin DeGraw, Radney Foster and others on previous records.聽 鈥淲e first started out thinking we鈥檇 really change some of the songs, but then every time we started to record it we were like, 鈥楾hat part is so good, let鈥檚 just do that!鈥 We wanted to honor those songwriters and musicians and say, 鈥榃hat you did on this record was amazing. Now we鈥檙e just going to make it a little more modern.鈥欌
Evans co-produced Entendido with Jarrad K 鈥 known for his work with Ruston Kelly, Weezer and the Goo Goo Dolls 鈥 at Chateau Noir in East Nashville.聽 鈥淚 started listening to Ruston Kelly鈥檚 album and just became obsessed with it,鈥 she says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what I do. I obsess over different artists and listen for months. Then my whole family gets addicted to it, so we became obsessed with Ruston Kelly and I said, 鈥業 have to find out who produced that. I want to work with him.鈥欌
When Evans met Jarrad, they quickly discovered they were kindred spirits.聽 鈥淲e just immediately bonded. He鈥檚 like my little brother now,鈥 she says with a smile. 鈥淎t our first meeting, we immediately fell in love musically.聽 We were talking about the Ruston record and had such a connection. We had another dinner and then we were like, 鈥楲et鈥檚 do it! Let鈥檚 go for it!鈥 So we started just sending song ideas to each other.鈥
Evans admits it was difficult culling the thousands of songs they liked down to the 13 that made the album.聽 鈥淚 knew I had to have a Patsy Cline song. I knew I had to have a John Mayer. I wanted a Wallflowers song because of how important Matt Chamberlain, the drummer, has been to my music,鈥 she says of recording the Wallflowers鈥 鈥6th Avenue Heartache.鈥澛 鈥淭hings are so different these days the way people make records, but Jarrad and I both agreed that we had to have everything real, everything super authentic, people in the studio together.鈥
That approach created magic that can be heard on every track. Evans recruited her son Avery to play guitar, which made the experience even sweeter. 鈥淭he first day we did 鈥楽he鈥檚 Got You鈥 and Carole King鈥檚 鈥業t鈥檚 Too Late,鈥 and then we did Chicago鈥檚 鈥楬ard To Say I鈥檓 Sorry.鈥 Avery ended up playing on the whole album.鈥
The project further became a family affair when Evans鈥 daughters Olivia and Audrey added their vocals to the album.聽 鈥淚t was so fun. I can鈥檛 even describe it,鈥 she says with a big smile and obvious maternal pride.聽 鈥淪ome things are just magical and you know they are from God. I know God put me with Jarrad and having my girls with me in the studio all day every day was so special. They are truly my best friends.鈥
Evans admits some of the songs she chose might surprise fans, but that was part of the fun. 鈥淚 was getting ready to go to my second song meeting with Jarrad and I heard 鈥楳y Sharona鈥 in the car,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥極h my God! We have to record that鈥 because it made me so happy. It鈥檚 badass! 鈥楳y Sharona鈥 is worthy of being covered.聽 It鈥檚 so iconic and I love surprising and shocking people who can鈥檛 believe that a female would cover that.鈥
As a big John Mayer fan, she knew she had to record one of his songs, but opted for something lesser known and more personal. 鈥淢y family was against me covering John Mayer because we love him so much,鈥 she admits. 鈥淭hey were like, 鈥榊ou can鈥檛 cover anything that was really popular. It has to be something obscure,鈥 so that鈥檚 why I chose 鈥楢ll We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye.鈥 That was always mine and Jay鈥檚 song because I would travel so much.鈥
In early 2020, Evans and her family moved back to Nashville after spending the past 11 years near Birmingham, where her husband, retired quarterback Jay Barker, works as a radio personality.聽 鈥淚t鈥檚 been the best decision,鈥 she says of returning to Nashville. 鈥淚 love the fact that I raised the kids in Alabama and it was a great thing to do.聽 But it鈥檚 simply so much easier doing my career from here, and that鈥檚 another reason why making this album was so awesome is because I could just wake up and drive across town to the studio and not figure out how to bus up from Birmingham.鈥
These days, Evans is enjoying the creative process more than ever and it鈥檚 easy to hear her passion in listening to Entendido.聽 鈥淚鈥檓 just having fun.聽 I love being on the road,鈥 says Evans. 鈥淲e鈥檙e working a ton. I鈥檓 having so much fun and am just deeply in love with music and performing.鈥
