R. CRAWFORD SEEGER Rissolty Rossolty
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, “Emperor”
BERIO/SCHUBERT Rendering

Ruth Crawford Seeger, stepmother to the famous folk singer Pete Seeger, was a major force in contemporary music circles in the first half of the 20th century. Her 1939 orchestral fantasia Rissolty Rossolty was commissioned by CBS as a tribute to American composers and highlights old folk tunes Phoebe, The Death of Callahan, and Rissolty, Rissolty.

Nicknamed the “Emperor”, Beethoven’s last piano concerto was composed during Napoleon’s artillery assault on Austria and is bursting with heroic themes and virtuosic cadenzas as well as one of the composer’s most tender slow movements.

Berio’s Rendering is a restoration of Schubert’s material for an incomplete 10th Symphony, which he sketched a few weeks before his death at the ripe age of 31.

“These last sketches, although very fragmentary, are of great homogeneity and they show Schubert in the process of testing different contrapuntal possibilities for one and the same thematic material… This ambiguity attracted me particularly: in fact my “cement-work” (connecting each sketch) aims amongst other things at making that ambiguity structurally expressive.”

– Luciano Berio

IMPORTANT UPDATE (March 2, 2021): It is the DSO’s duty to ensure the safety and health of our employees and patrons when we hold concerts, and we will continue to follow our current protocols backstage and in the front of house with patrons. Masks will be mandatory for staff, patrons, musicians and anyone working in the Meyerson. It has been clearly demonstrated that masks and social distancing slow the spread of COVID-19, and at this time, the CDC is recommending mask wearing in public places. Despite Texas Governor Abbott’s elimination of mask requirements and attendance limits in venues as of March 10, the DSO will require masks in the Meyerson Symphony Center, and we will limit attendance for the remainder of this season.
