Hispanic Heritage Month 2024

During the annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, we honor the achievements, histories, traditions, contributions and cultural diversity of Hispanic and Latin Americans. The 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month national theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” perfectly encapsulates the spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity that defines the Hispanic and Latin American experience.

  • Sazon Latin Food Festival September 22, 11:00 am – 6:00pm – FREE EVENT
    • Description: Enjoy a day of Latin Food, live music and a great time at The Sazon Latin Food Festival! We will have Latin food vendors representing all the best flavors from the Caribbean, Central and South America.
    • There will also be great music and drinks, so make sure you bring your friends and family for a day of fun and celebration. Come hungry, because you’re going to want to try everything and we’ll have something for everyone including dessert!

  • Dallas Symphony Mosaic Performance Series – September 24, 12:30 pm – 1:30pm – FREE EVENT
    • Description: Join us for the launch of DSO’s new initiative! In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Dallas Symphony Mosaic Community is excited to welcome special guest musical collective El Chanclazo, featuring the DSO’s very own Elmer Churampi! We will also highlight the impactful work of DSO partner organization, the Greater North Texas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Feel free to bring your lunch and enjoy some phenomenal music and fun. Complimentary Spanish-themed desserts will be provided by Chef Moises Martinez.

What brings you joy about your heritage and culture as a member of the Hispanic community?

For many Hispanic individuals, their heritage is a core part of their identity. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and other events provides a sense of pride and belonging, strengthens community bonds and supports the recognition of Hispanic achievements and experiences.

The diverse and flavorful Hispanic cuisine is an immense source of joy and pride. Whether it’s enjoying traditional dishes like tacos, arepas, or empanadas, food is central and undoubtedly a favorite part of my Hispanic culture.

Why is Hispanic Heritage Month important?

Hispanic Heritage Month is profoundly important to me because it represents both a personal and collective journey of resilience, identity, and pride.

Growing up in an era when Hispanic identity wasn’t widely embraced, my parents instilled the importance of maintaining cultural heritage amidst adversity. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the sacrifices and the rich contributions of the Hispanic community, past and present, and affirm our place in the broader narrative of American life. It’s about celebrating our culture, acknowledging the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors, and passing down our heritage with pride to future generations.

Who is a notable Hispanic figure, past or present, that inspires you, and why?

Maestro Eduardo Mata was a great inspiration for me. I grew up in Dallas in the 80’s and was always thrilled to witness him and the Dallas Symphony. They introduced classical music and symphonic concerts to me and my friends and family. As a young boy of 12, I even had the honor of meeting Maestro Mata and playing piano for him. This will remain an unforgettable experience for me. I will always treasure the encouragement, wisdom and kindness he showed me that day.

Now, as a member of the Dallas Symphony under Maestro Fabio Luisi, I feel truly honored to carry on the great symphonic art tradition to future generations of Dallasites and beyond!
